Gum disease risk to heart disease.
It is important to have regular dental hygiene sessions, every six months, so that the teeth and gums are cleaned professionally to maintain optimal health of the oral tissues.
The mouth/body connection.
It is becoming commonly known that oral health is directly linked to the overall health of the body. Further proof of the necessity of this treatment has been presented at the American Heart Association Scientific meeting and abstracts appear in the corresponding journal.
The research involved two studies with the first study looking at individuals in excess of 51000 adults and the findings were that those individuals who had professional scaling and cleaning of tooth and gums were less likely to have strokes and heart attacks, compared to those who had never had their teeth cleaned by a dental professional. The dental Hygiene sessions reduced the risk of the individual to these serious conditions.
The second study looked at 8000 participants who had periodontal disease. The findings showed that periodontal (gum) disease could predict the risk of the individual having strokes, heart failure and a heart attack. The risk of these diseases could be predicted at varying degrees.
The take home message
Regular visits to the dentist for dental hygiene sessions does not only give you cleaner teeth and gums and improves the appearance of the teeth and the state of the breath, it can also prevent the development of more serious diseases such as strokes, heart disease and heart failure all of which can lead to a fatality.
